Joining Young Black Brotha Records
In 1991, Ray Luv signed with an independent music label called Young Black Brotha Records. His friends, fellow rappers Mac Dre and Mac Mall, helped him join the label. This was an important step in his music career.
First Releases and Big Success
Ray Luv's first collection of songs, an extended play (EP) called Who Can Be Trusted?, came out in 1993. It was released by Young Black Brotha. A song from that EP, "Get Your Money On," became very popular on local radio stations.
The next year, in 1994, Ray Luv was featured on the Above The Rim soundtrack. His first album with a major record company was Forever Hustlin'. It was released in 1995 by Interscope Records through Young Black Brotha. This album was very successful, reaching number 21 on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums chart.
Working with Tupac and Other Rappers
One of Ray Luv's most well-known songs is "Last Nite." The music video for this song was directed by Tupac Shakur in 1994. Ray Luv was good friends with Tupac for a long time. He was also close with other Bay Area rappers like Mac Dre and Mac Mall. In 1997, Ray Luv contributed to a Bay Area rap collection called Best of Da Bay: A Series of Slaps. This was also released by Young Black Brotha.
Ray Luv Today
Today, Ray Luv is a co-owner of an online video series called Pushin' The Bay TV. He runs the show with Emcee T, another rapper from Santa Rosa, California.
