Raymond Alvin Jackson (born August 3, 1949) is a very experienced judge in the United States. He serves as a senior United States district judge for a special court called the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. This means he has been a judge for a long time and continues to help the court with important cases.

Early Life and Education
Raymond Jackson was born in Sussex, Virginia, in 1949. He worked hard in school and earned his first degree, a Bachelor of Arts, from Norfolk State University in 1970. Later, he went on to study law at the University of Virginia School of Law, where he earned his law degree (called a Juris Doctor) in 1973.
Military and Legal Career
After finishing law school, Jackson joined the United States Army. He worked in the JAG Corps, which is where lawyers serve in the military. He was a captain in the Army until 1977. Even after leaving active duty, he continued to serve in the United States Army Reserve and became a colonel.
From 1977 to 1993, Raymond Jackson worked as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia. In this role, he represented the U.S. government in legal cases. He also shared his knowledge by teaching law at the College of William and Mary for many years.
Becoming a Federal Judge
In 1993, President Bill Clinton chose Raymond Jackson to become a judge for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. This is a very important job where judges make decisions about federal laws. The United States Senate approved his nomination, and he officially became a judge on November 22, 1993.
Judge Jackson served as a district judge for many years. In 2021, he took on a new role called "senior status." This means he can still hear cases and help the court, but with a reduced workload.
Family Life
Raymond Jackson is married to Gwendolyn Jackson, who was also a judge. They have a daughter named Candace Jackson-Akiwumi. She has followed in her parents' footsteps and is also a judge, serving on the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit.
