Jamar Kentrell Walker (born 1986) is an American lawyer. He serves as a United States district judge for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. Before this, he worked as a lawyer for the United States government.
Early Life and School
Walker grew up on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. He went to Nandua High School. There, he was the president of his class.
He studied at the University of Virginia. In 2008, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. He then continued his studies at the University of Virginia School of Law. In 2011, he received his Juris Doctor degree, which is a law degree.
Jamar Walker's Career
After law school, Walker worked for a judge. From 2011 to 2012, he was a law clerk for Judge Raymond Alvin Jackson. A law clerk helps a judge with research and writing.
From 2012 to 2015, he worked as a lawyer at a firm called Covington & Burling in Washington, D.C.. He then became an assistant United States attorney. This means he worked for the U.S. government as a prosecutor. He did this from 2015 to 2023. His main focus was on white-collar crime. These are crimes that involve money or business, like fraud.
Becoming a Federal Judge
In March 2022, two U.S. Senators, Mark Warner and Tim Kaine, suggested Walker for a judge position. On July 13, 2022, President Joe Biden officially nominated him. This means the President chose him to be a United States district judge. He was nominated for the position that Judge Raymond Alvin Jackson had left.
The Senate Judiciary Committee held a meeting about his nomination. This happened on September 21, 2022. The committee voted to approve his nomination on December 1, 2022.
His nomination was sent back to the President on January 3, 2023. However, he was nominated again on the same day. The committee voted to approve him again on February 2, 2023.
The full Senate voted on his nomination on February 28, 2023. He was confirmed, meaning he was approved to become a judge. He officially received his job on March 3, 2023. He was sworn in as a judge on March 6, 2023.
