Raymond Joseph Lohier Jr. was born on December 1, 1965. He is a Canadian-born American lawyer. Today, he serves as a United States circuit judge. He works for the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. Before becoming a judge, he worked as a lawyer for the government. He was also a senior trial attorney for civil rights. Lohier was the first Haitian-American to become a federal judge. The United States Senate officially approved his appointment.

Early Life and Education
Raymond Lohier Jr. was born in Montreal, Canada. His family comes from Haiti. He finished high school at Friends' Central School in Philadelphia in 1984.
He then went to Harvard College. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with honors. After that, he studied law at the New York University School of Law. There, he was the main editor for a law journal. After law school, he worked as an assistant for Judge Robert P. Patterson Jr.. This was at the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York.
Career as a Lawyer
Early in his career, Lohier worked as a lawyer at a firm called Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton. From 1997 to 2000, he worked for the government. He was a Senior Trial Attorney in the United States Department of Justice Civil Rights Division. In this role, he led important lawsuits. These cases were about making sure people were treated fairly in jobs. He also worked on other important civil rights issues.
He later became the chief of the Securities and Commodities Fraud Task Force. This team investigated financial crimes.
Major Cases
Lohier is well-known for his work at the U.S. Attorney's office. He helped oversee investigations into major financial fraud cases. These included the Madoff investment scandal and the Marc Dreier case.
Becoming a Federal Judge
On February 8, 2010, Senator Chuck Schumer suggested Lohier for a judge position. This position was on the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. It became open when Judge Sonia Sotomayor moved to the Supreme Court of the United States.
On March 10, 2010, President Barack Obama officially nominated Lohier for the role. The Senate voted on December 19, 2010. They approved Lohier by a vote of 92 to 0. He officially became a judge on December 20, 2010.
Personal Life
Raymond Lohier is married to Donna Hae Kyun Lee. She is a professor at the CUNY School of Law. They got married in 1999 and live in Brooklyn, New York.
In 2021, Lohier was chosen to join the Harvard Board of Overseers. This is a governing board at Harvard University. His term will last until 2027. He is also a member of the American Law Institute, which is a group of legal experts.
