Early Life and Legal Training

Raymond West began his legal journey in Ireland. In 1871, he became a barrister at King's Inns in Dublin. This training prepared him for a long and successful career in law.

A Distinguished Career in India

Sir Raymond West spent many years working in British India. From 1873 to 1887, he served as a Puisne Judge of the High Court of Bombay. A "Puisne Judge" is a regular judge in a high court, not the chief judge. His work involved making important legal decisions in the region.

He also played a role in the government of Bombay (now known as Mumbai) from 1887 to 1892. Being a member of the government meant he helped make decisions about how the region was run.

Contributions to Education and Knowledge

Beyond his work as a judge, Sir Raymond West was also involved in education and learning. He was the President of the Bombay Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society. This society was a group dedicated to studying the history, culture, and science of Asia.

He also served as the Vice Chancellor of the University of Bombay. The Vice Chancellor is a senior leader at a university, helping to manage its operations and academic programs. Later in his career, he became a Reader in Indian Law at Cambridge University in England. This meant he taught about Indian law to students there.

Recognition and Honors

For his many years of service and contributions, Raymond West received a special honor. In May 1888, he was made a Knight Commander of the Order of the Star of India (KCIE). This knighthood was a high award given by the British Crown to people who had done great service in India. After receiving this honor, he was known as "Sir Raymond West."
