Rayon is a special type of fiber that people make. It's not a natural fiber like cotton or wool, but it's also not fully man-made like plastic fibers. Rayon is created from natural materials, usually cellulose found in wood pulp. Because it starts with natural stuff, it's sometimes called a "regenerated fiber."

Rayon can feel and look like many different natural fabrics. It can be smooth like silk, soft like wool, comfy like cotton, or strong like linen. The types that feel like silk are often called "artificial silk."

What is Rayon?

Rayon is unique because it comes from polymers that are found in nature. This means it's not considered a "synthetic fiber," which are fibers made completely from chemicals. Instead, rayon is made by taking natural materials and changing them into a useful fiber.

Different Kinds of Rayon

There are a few main types of rayon, and they are made in slightly different ways. The most common types include viscose, modal, and lyocell. Each type has its own special qualities and uses. For example, some might be stronger, while others might be softer or more breathable.

How is Rayon Made?

Making rayon starts with pure cellulose. This cellulose usually comes from wood pulp, which is like the soft, mushy part of trees.

From Wood to Fiber

First, the wood pulp is treated with chemicals. This turns the cellulose into a liquid form that can be used. This liquid is then pushed through tiny holes in a special tool called a spinneret. Imagine squeezing toothpaste through a tiny nozzle – that's similar to how the fibers are formed!

As the liquid comes out of the spinneret, it goes into another chemical bath. This bath makes the liquid turn back into solid fibers. These new fibers are almost pure cellulose again.

Keeping Workers Safe

Making rayon involves using certain chemicals, like carbon disulfide. Factories that make rayon must be very careful. They use special safety steps to make sure workers are protected and stay healthy while handling these materials.

Uses for Rayon

Rayon is used in many everyday items because it's so versatile. You can find it in clothing like shirts, dresses, and linings. It's also used in home items such as curtains, bedsheets, and upholstery for furniture. Because it can imitate different natural fibers, rayon is a popular choice for many products.
