Recoilless rifle facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Recoilless rifles are special types of guns that can shoot very big bullets or explosives. The cool thing about them is that they don't have any recoil.

You might know that when a regular gun shoots, it kicks back hard. This kick is called recoil. It happens because of one of Newton's important rules about motion. This rule says that for every action, there's an equal and opposite reaction. So, when a gun pushes a bullet forward, the bullet pushes the gun backward with the same strength. The bigger the bullet, the stronger the kick.

Recoilless rifles are designed to avoid this kick. They have a special hole at the back. When the gun fires, some of the force from the shot goes out through this hole, pushing backward. This balances out the force pushing the bullet forward. This way, the gun doesn't kick back at the person using it.

However, this backward push, called "backblast," is very powerful. It's strong enough to hurt or even kill someone standing behind the gun. So, people using recoilless rifles must always make sure no one is behind them when they shoot.

How Recoilless Rifles Work

Recoilless rifles are different from regular guns because of how they handle the force of firing.

  • Normal Guns: In a normal gun, the explosion that pushes the bullet forward also pushes the gun backward. This backward push is the recoil.
  • Recoilless Rifles: These guns let some of the hot gases from the explosion escape out the back. This creates a forward push that cancels out the backward push (recoil). It's like a rocket engine pushing the gun forward just as the bullet pushes it backward. This clever design means the shooter doesn't feel a strong kick.

Why They Are Useful

Because recoilless rifles don't have much recoil, they can fire much larger and heavier bullets or explosives than a regular gun of the same size. This makes them very powerful weapons. They are often used to destroy things like tanks or strong buildings. They are also lighter than cannons that shoot similar-sized shells, making them easier to move around.

Backblast Safety

The backblast from a recoilless rifle is a jet of hot gas and sometimes even small pieces of propellant. It's very dangerous.

  • Clear Area: Shooters must always make sure the area behind the gun is completely clear of people, animals, or anything flammable.
  • Dust and Debris: The backblast can also kick up a lot of dust and debris, which can give away the shooter's position.

History of Recoilless Rifles

The idea of a gun without recoil isn't new.

  • Early Designs: One of the first successful recoilless guns was the Davis gun, invented by Commander Cleland Davis in the United States around 1910. It was even used on airplanes during World War I.
  • Modern Use: Recoilless rifles became more common during and after World War II. Countries like the United States, Soviet Union, and Sweden developed many different types. They were popular because they were powerful but also light enough for soldiers to carry.
  • Current Role: Today, recoilless rifles are still used by many armies around the world. They are especially useful for infantry (foot soldiers) who need a powerful weapon to fight tanks or fortified positions. They are also sometimes used for things like avalanche control in mountains.
