The red-collared lorikeet (Trichoglossus rubritorquis) is a type of lorikeet. It used to be considered a part of the rainbow lorikeet family. But now, scientists see it as its own unique species. You can find this colorful bird living in the northern parts of Australia.

Where Does the Red-collared Lorikeet Live?
The red-collared lorikeet makes its home in Northern Australia. You can spot it as far west as Broome, Western Australia. It also lives across the beautiful Kimberley region. Its range extends over the top of the Northern Territory. You might even find it near the bottom of the Cape York Peninsula.
What Does the Red-collared Lorikeet Look Like?
This lorikeet is about 305 mm (12 in) long. It has very bright and colorful feathers. It is the biggest lorikeet found in Australia.
Colors and Features
Its head and face are a bright blue color. It has an orange to red chest. This color narrows into a thin band around its neck, like a collar. Its wings and tail are green. Some of its feathers have yellow tips. The feathers on its lower belly are dark blue to black. This bird has a red beak. Its legs and feet are grey to brown.
Male vs. Female
Both male and female red-collared lorikeets look similar. The female, however, is usually a bit smaller than the male. These birds can live for up to 15 years.

Red-collared lorikeets are birds that move around a lot. They travel in large groups, called flocks. They are always looking for food.
What Do They Eat?
These birds love to eat nectar from flowers. They especially enjoy the nectar from eucalyptus trees. They also feed on other flowering plants, like grevilleas. Sometimes, they eat seeds from grass trees too.

The red-collared lorikeet is known for being restless. It is also a very noisy bird. When it flies, it makes a loud, shrill shrieking sound.
Reproduction and Life Cycle
Red-collared lorikeets build their nests in hollows. They prefer to nest inside eucalyptus trees. These trees are often found near a creek.
Eggs and Breeding Season
During the breeding season, the female lorikeet lays two eggs. These eggs are a dull white color. The breeding season can happen at different times. It might be from August to January. Sometimes it's from March to June. Other times, it's from May to December.
