How Red Mesa Schools Started
Before Red Mesa had its own school district, this area was part of the Chinle Unified School District. In the 1970s, the Red Mesa elementary and junior high schools were built.
Then, in July 1983, something big happened. The Red Mesa Unified School District was officially created. It separated from the Chinle School District to manage its own schools.

Red Mesa High School
Red Mesa High School is located in Red Mesa. It serves older students in the district.
Red Mesa Junior High School (RMJHS)
The Red Mesa Junior High School is also in Red Mesa. Its main brick building was finished in 1972. A special dedication ceremony was held by Thomas Brady, a medicine man from Sweetwater.
Red Mesa Elementary School (RMES)
The Red Mesa Elementary School is found in Red Mesa too. Work on the school began in 1967, and construction started in 1970. When it first opened, students from many nearby places came here. These places included Red Mesa, Baby Rocks, Dennehotso, Mexican Water, Sweetwater, and Teec Nos Pos.
Round Rock K-8 School
The Round Rock K-8 school teaches students from kindergarten through eighth grade. It is located just off Arizona State Highway 191.
Red Valley/Cove High School
Red Valley/Cove High School opened in 2005. It serves students from the Red Valley area.
Other Important Buildings
The Red Mesa Unified School District has other buildings that help it run smoothly. The main administration building opened in 1988. This is where the district's leaders work.
A parent education center was built in 1996. This center helps parents get involved in their children's education. In 1998, a staff development center opened. This building helps teachers and staff learn new skills. Finally, the Music Art Preschool (MAP) building opened in 1999.
