Redbanks is found on the main road that connects Gawler to Mallala. This road is actually called Redbanks Road. The town is just east of a bridge that crosses the Light River.

Early Days of Redbanks

The town of Redbanks has a history stretching back many years. A Post Office opened in Redbanks in November 1868. This was an important place for people to send and receive letters and packages. The Post Office served the community for over 100 years before closing in March 1971.

The Churches of Redbanks

Churches played a big part in the early community life of Redbanks.

The First Wesleyan Methodist Church

The first Wesleyan Methodist church in Redbanks was built in 1867. This church was a central place for people to gather and worship. It closed down early in the 1900s. However, it later reopened for a short time.

A New Methodist Church

A new Methodist church was built closer to the town center in 1934. This new church opened its doors on July 29, 1934. The older church building was taken down around 1950. Its stone was reused to help build the hall for the new church. The new Methodist Church served the community for about 30 years. It eventually closed in August 1964.
