History of Pinkerton Plains

How Pinkerton Plains Got Its Name

The area is named after William Pinkerton. He was an early farmer who raised animals in this region back in the 1840s. Before settlers arrived, this land belonged to the Kaurna people.

People started calling the area 'Pinkerton Plains' around 1866. This was about the same time that families began to settle here.

Early Settlers and the Church

Many of the first settlers in Pinkerton Plains were Irish Catholic families. In 1866, they built a church called St Benedict's Catholic Church. The church closed in 1900, but its cemetery is still used by local farmers today.

Railway and School

Around 1868, a railway station was built in Pinkerton Plains. This station was part of a railway line that ran right through the area.

Pinkerton Plains School opened its doors in 1886. It taught children in the community for many years before closing in 1967.

Famous Local Inventor

One of the most well-known people from Pinkerton Plains was Nicholas McCabe. He was a clever farmer who invented something called 'McCabe's Wheat Pickler'. This device helped farmers prepare their wheat and was used across South Australia for a while.
