The County of Gawler is a special way that land is divided up in South Australia. It is one of 49 such areas, called cadastral counties. Think of it like a big section on a map used for keeping track of land. Governor George Grey officially created it in 1842. He named it after a past Governor, George Gawler.

This county has clear borders. To the north, you'll find the Wakefield River. The Gulf St Vincent is on its western side. The eastern border follows the path of the Horrocks Highway. And to the south, it's bordered by the Gawler River.

What are Hundreds?

Inside the County of Gawler, there are smaller land sections called hundreds. These are like smaller neighborhoods within the larger county area.

Here are the hundreds found in the County of Gawler:

• In the northern part of the county, moving from east to west, you'll find the Hundred of Alma, Hundred of Dalkey, Hundred of Balaklava, and Hundred of Inkerman. These are all located on the southern bank of the Wakefield River. They stretch from a place called Undalya all the way to the river's end at Port Wakefield.
• In the middle of the county, the Hundred of Dublin is on the western side, right along the coast of Gulf St Vincent. The Hundred of Grace is in the very center. It covers a large part of the lower Light River area.
• In the southwest and southeast parts of the county, you'll find the Hundred of Port Gawler and the Hundred of Mudla Wirra. These two hundreds are located on the northern bank of the Gawler River.
