Redding Rancheria facts for kids
The Redding Rancheria is a federally recognized tribe located in Northern California. They have a special land area called a reservation in Shasta County. This land, about 31 acres, was bought in 1922 by the Bureau of Indian Affairs. This was done to provide a place for Native American people to live and gather. Many Indigenous groups in the area had lost their traditional lands. In 1979, three of these groups officially organized and became recognized as a tribe.

The Redding Rancheria is made up of three main groups of Native Americans. These groups are the Wintu, Achomawi (also known as Pit River), and Yana Indians. Their reservation is located in the northern part of the Sacramento Valley. It is very close to the city of Redding.
How the Tribe Was Formed
For a long time, many Native American people in California did not have their own land. The United States government bought the land for the Redding Rancheria in 1922. This helped provide a home for these groups. Later, in 1979, the Wintu, Achomawi, and Yana people living there officially formed a tribe. This made them a "federally recognized tribe." This means the U.S. government officially recognizes them as a sovereign nation.
Making a Living: The Tribe's Economy
The Redding Rancheria has worked to create ways for its members to earn money. One important business they started is the Win-River Resort & Casino. This resort is located along California State Route 273, close to Interstate 5. It is between the cities of Redding and Anderson. The casino has been very successful. It brings in a lot of money for the tribe. This money helps the tribe support its members and community projects.
Learning and Schools
Children living on the Redding Rancheria attend local schools. The ranchería is served by two main school districts. These are the Cascade Union Elementary School District for younger students. Older students attend schools in the Anderson Union High School District.
