The Redpath Sugar Refinery is a special place in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It's where sugar is stored and made, and it also has a fun museum! You can find it in the eastern part of Downtown Toronto, right where Queens Quay and Jarvis Street meet.

What Happens at the Refinery?

The Redpath Sugar Refinery opened its doors in 1958. It's a big place where Redpath Sugar stores and refines sugar. The complex has two main buildings. Building 1 is eight floors tall, and Building 2 has five floors. The sugar museum is located inside Building 2.

Where Does the Sugar Come From?

The sugar that arrives at the plant comes from far-off places. It travels all the way from the Caribbean and Brazil. Huge ships bring the sugar to Toronto. They use a special waterway called the Saint Lawrence Seaway to get here.

Because ships can only travel during certain times of the year, a lot of sugar cane is stored. Each fall, a large amount of sugar cane is kept in big storage areas. These areas are right next to the processing plant.

Special Art on the Building

You might notice something cool on the outside of the building. The north wall of the Raw Sugar Shed has a giant whale mural. This amazing artwork was created by an artist named Wyland.

For many years, a bright red sign saying "Redpath Sugar" lit up the north side of the building. In 2006, that sign was changed. However, the Redpath sign on the west side of the building is still there today.

Redpath Sugar Museum

Since 1979, the Redpath Sugar Museum has been open to visitors. It's a great place to learn all about sugar! The museum has many exhibits that show how sugar is refined. You can also discover how different sugar products are made.

The museum is connected with other important groups. These include the Canadian Museums Association and the Virtual Museum of Canada. It's a fun and educational spot for everyone.
