Reed Nelson Weisiger (born May 2, 1838 – died September 12, 1908) was an important person in Texas history. He served as a Texas State Senator for District 26. A state senator is a leader elected by people to represent them in the state government.
Many people thought Reed Weisiger would become the Governor of Texas, but he chose not to run for that big job. He was a very active senator, leading the Stock and Stock Raising Committee and serving on eleven other important committees. He worked in the Texas Legislature from 1891 to 1893.
Early Life and Education
Reed Weisiger was born in Danville, Kentucky, on May 2, 1838. He went to school there and later attended Centre College. He finished his studies in 1858, learning a lot about classical subjects. After college, he moved to Texas and became one of the first settlers in Victoria County.
Career and Military Service
Reed Weisiger was a successful rancher and farmer. He was especially known for raising special racehorses from famous stables in Kentucky. One of his horses, named Incommode, even ran in the famous Kentucky Derby race in 1887.
During the American Civil War, Reed Weisiger served as a cavalry officer in the Confederate States Army. Cavalry officers rode horses in battle. By the end of the war, he had earned the rank of captain.
Weisiger was also a member of the Masonic Lodge, which is a type of social and charitable organization. He held the degree of Master Mason, which is a high rank within the group.
Family Life
Reed Weisiger's father was Dr. Joseph Weisiger, and his mother was Isabella Reed Weisiger. His mother's family came from Virginia and was related to other well-known families like the Clays and Adamses.
On June 24, 1874, Reed Weisiger married Annie Belle Callender. They had eight children together: Robert Sidney, Roper C., Joseph Reed, Isabella, Lucy R., Sarah, William Hardeman, and Grayson Carter Weisiger.
