The city was started in 1907. It was built along the tracks of the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad. The city was named after E. O. Reeder, who was an important engineer for the railroad.

History of Reeder

In 1907, two brothers, Albert and Charles Leff, set up a post office. They also had other businesses about one and a half miles east of where Reeder is today.

Later, the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad planned out the current town area. They decided to name it Reeder. The Leff post office then moved to the new town on March 13, 1908. It kept the name Leff until July 1, 1908, when it officially became Reeder.

In 1923, a powerful tornado hit the area. It destroyed many farmhouses and sadly caused some deaths.
