Reema Lagoo (born Nayan Bhadbhade; 21 June 1958 – 18 May 2017) was a famous Indian actress. She worked in both Hindi and Marathi films, as well as on television and in theatre. She became very well-known for playing motherly roles in many popular movies and TV shows during the 1990s and early 2000s.

She was loved by many for her warm and kind portrayals of mothers. Some of her most famous TV shows were Shriman Shrimati and Tu Tu Main Main.

Reema Lagoo started acting when she was a child. Her mother was also an actress in Marathi theatre and films, which inspired her. After a break, she returned to acting as an adult in Marathi plays in Mumbai.

She became more widely recognized through her roles in television shows and films. Her first film was the Marathi movie Sinhasan in 1979.

Hindi Films

Reema Lagoo often played supporting roles in Hindi films, especially as the mother of the main characters. She became famous after appearing in Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988), where she played Juhi Chawla's mother.

She then starred in the very successful film Maine Pyar Kiya (1989) as Salman Khan's mother. She also appeared in other popular movies like Saajan (1991), Gumrah (1993), Jai Kishen (1994), and Rangeela (1995).

Some of her biggest hit films include Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! (1994), Yeh Dillagi (1994), Dilwale (1994), Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003), Hum Saath-Saath Hain (1999), and Vaastav: The Reality (1999). In Vaastav, she played the mother of a gangster, a role that won her an award. People in the media often called her a "new-age mother" in Hindi cinema because of her modern and strong portrayals.

Even though she was known for playing mothers, she also took on different kinds of roles. For example, she played a dancer in Aakrosh (1980) and a tough businesswoman in Yeh Dillagi (1994).

Marathi Films

Reema Lagoo also had a significant career in Marathi films. She won the Maharashtra State Film Award for Best Actress for her role in the 2002 film Reshamgaath. Her performance in Janma (2011) was also highly praised. She received the V Shantaram Award from the Government of Maharashtra for her contributions to Marathi cinema.

Television Shows

Reema Lagoo was also a successful television actress in both Hindi and Marathi languages. She started her TV career in 1985 with the Hindi series Khandaan.

Her roles as Kokila Kulkarni in Shriman Shrimati and as Devaki Verma in Tu Tu Main Main were her most popular TV appearances. For Tu Tu Main Main, she even won an award for Best Actress in a Comic Role. She also appeared on the Marathi show Maanacha Muzra, which celebrates famous Marathi personalities.

Personal Life

Reema Lagoo was born on June 21, 1958, with the name Nayan Bhadbhade. Her mother, Mandakini Bhadbhade, was a well-known Marathi stage actress. Reema's talent for acting was noticed when she was a student in Pune.

After finishing school, she started acting professionally. For ten years, starting in 1979, she worked at the Union Bank of India in Mumbai. During this time, she also continued to act in television and films.

She met Vivek Lagoo, who was also an actor and worked at the same bank, in 1976. They got married in 1978, and she took the name Reema Lagoo. They later separated, but they remained friends. Their daughter, Mrunmayee, is also an actress and a theatre director.

Passing Away

Reema Lagoo was filming for the TV series Naamkarann until the evening of May 17, 2017. Later that night, she felt chest pain and was taken to a hospital in Mumbai. She sadly passed away at 3:15 AM on May 18, 2017, due to a cardiac arrest (a sudden stop of the heart). At the time, she was described as being in good health. Her funeral was held in Mumbai by her daughter.
