The Witch Head reflection nebula (IC2118) looks like a witch's face. It's about 1000 light years from Earth and glows because it reflects light from the bright star Rigel in the constellation Orion.

In astronomy, a reflection nebula is a huge cloud of dust in space. This dust cloud glows because it reflects light from a nearby star or many stars. The light from these stars is not strong enough to heat up the gas in the nebula and make it glow on its own (which would be an emission nebula). Instead, the light simply bounces off the tiny dust particles, making the cloud visible.

Reflection nebulae often look blue. This is because of something called Rayleigh scattering. Blue light scatters more easily than red light when it hits small dust particles. It's the same reason our sky looks blue during the day and sunsets look red!

What is a Reflection Nebula?

A reflection nebula is like a cosmic mirror. It doesn't make its own light. Instead, it shines by reflecting the light from stars that are close by. Imagine a dusty room with a bright lamp. You can see the dust floating in the air because the lamp's light hits it and bounces off. A reflection nebula works in a similar way, but on a much bigger scale in space.

How are Reflection Nebulae Formed?

These dusty clouds are often places where new stars are being born. As gravity pulls gas and dust together, new stars begin to form. Once these new stars become bright enough, their light illuminates the surrounding dust, creating a reflection nebula.

Reflection and Emission Nebulae

Sometimes, reflection nebulae are found right next to emission nebulae. Emission nebulae glow because the gas inside them is heated up by very hot, young stars, causing the gas to emit its own light. When both types of nebulae are seen together, they are sometimes called 'diffuse nebulae'. A famous example of this is the Orion nebula, which has both parts.
