Reggie Patterson's Baseball Journey
Starting with the White Sox
Reggie Patterson began his baseball journey when the Chicago White Sox team signed him in June 1979. He was an amateur player then, meaning he wasn't paid yet. He played his first Major League Baseball game in 1981 for the White Sox. This happened right after a big baseball strike ended that year.
On August 13, 1981, Reggie was the starting pitcher in his very first game. He faced the Boston Red Sox at their home field, Fenway Park. The game was tough for him, and the White Sox lost 9–6.
Moving to the Cubs
Reggie did not play in the Major Leagues in 1982. Instead, he spent that season playing for the Edmonton Trappers. This team was in the Triple-A Pacific Coast League, which is a level below the Major Leagues. After that season, he was traded to the Chicago Cubs team.
Reggie played for the Chicago Cubs organization for the next three seasons, from 1983 to 1985. During this time, he split his playing time. He played some games in the Major Leagues, often as a "September call-up." This means he joined the main team later in the season. He also played for the Iowa Cubs, another Triple-A team.
A Historic Moment
On September 8, 1985, Reggie Patterson was on the mound when something historic happened. Pete Rose, a famous baseball player, hit his 4,191st career hit against Reggie. This hit was a single in the first inning of a game between the Reds and Chicago. Many people believe this hit was the one that broke the all-time record for most hits in baseball history. Reggie was released by the Cubs on March 31, 1986.
Playing in Other Leagues
Reggie finished his professional baseball career playing for the Tecolotes de los Dos Laredos team in the Mexican League in 1986. He also played baseball during the winter in other countries. These included the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and Venezuela.
