Playing Football
Reinhard Stumpf played professional football for 13 years. He started his career in 1984 with Kickers Offenbach in Germany's second league, the 2. Bundesliga.
Early Club Days
After a short time with Karlsruher SC, he went back to play for Kickers Offenbach in 1987. In 1989, a bigger club, 1. FC Kaiserslautern, invited him to play in the top German league, the Bundesliga.
Winning Big Titles
With Kaiserslautern, Stumpf won two major trophies. He helped his team win the DFB-Pokal (German Cup) in 1990. The very next year, in 1991, they won the German Championship!
There's a cool story about his cup win: just hours before his team won, his sister, Daniela Stumpf, also won the women's cup on the exact same field with her team, FSV Frankfurt.
Playing Abroad
In 1992, Stumpf moved to Turkey to play for Galatasaray. He had great success there too! In 1993, his team won both the Süper Lig (Turkish League title) and the Turkish Cup. He won another Turkish league title in 1994.
Final Playing Years
After his success in Turkey, he returned to Germany. He played two seasons for 1. FC Köln. Then, he went to Japan for a short time in 1996 to play for Brumell Sendai. He stayed there for less than six months. Back in Germany, he joined Hannover 96's reserve team in 1997 before he stopped playing professionally.
Coaching Football
After his playing career, Reinhard Stumpf became a football coach.
Starting as Assistant Coach
He began as an assistant coach at 1. FC Kaiserslautern under head coach Otto Rehhagel. When Rehhagel left in October 2000, Stumpf became the main coach for a short time.
Moving Around as a Coach
Stumpf worked as an assistant coach for Erik Gerets from 2002 to 2007. They worked together at Kaiserslautern again, then at VfL Wolfsburg, and finally at the famous Turkish club Galatasaray. At Galatasaray, they won the 2005–06 Süper Lig title in 2006.
In September 2007, Stumpf became the head coach of Gençlerbirliği in Turkey, but his time there was short.
Coaching in Saudi Arabia
In 2009, he joined Erik Gerets again as an assistant coach for Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia. In 2010, they won the Saudi Championship and the Crown Prince Cup. After Gerets left, Stumpf was the temporary head coach for the main team. Later, he took charge of Al-Hilal's Under-21 team.
Other Coaching Roles
In September 2011, he became the head coach of Tunisian club Club Sportif Sfaxien. However, he left in December 2011 because he found it hard to communicate with his players.
In January 2012, he became the manager of the German club Wacker Burghausen. In July 2013, he went back to coach Al-Hilal's Under-21 team.
In October 2014, he became the head coach of Al Shabab in Saudi Arabia. In the summer of 2015, he was named head coach of Al-Ettifaq.
His most recent coaching job was with Al-Diriyah in Saudi Arabia. He was appointed manager in October 2021 but resigned in February 2022.
