History of Rekareka
First European Sighting
A Portuguese explorer named Pedro Fernandes de Queirós was the first European to see Rekareka. He was working for the Spanish Crown at the time. He discovered the island on February 13, 1606, during his trip across the Pacific Ocean.
Island Names Over Time
The Spanish explorers called this island "La Sagitaria." They also reported that people were living on the island when they first found it. On some old maps, Rekareka is also shown with the names "Bonne Esperance" and "Good Hope."
How Rekareka is Governed
Belonging to a Commune
Rekareka is part of a larger administrative area called a "commune." A commune is like a local government area. Rekareka belongs to the commune of Amanu. The Amanu commune includes Rekareka (which has no people living on it) and another atoll called Tauere.
Association with Hao
The Amanu commune is also connected to the Hao commune. This means that Hao helps manage the areas that include Rekareka.
