"Remember Me" is a very popular song from the 2017 animated Pixar movie Coco. It was written by the talented team of Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez. You can hear different singers perform the song in the film, including Benjamin Bratt, Gael García Bernal, Anthony Gonzalez, and Ana Ofelia Murguía. A pop version of the song, sung by Miguel and Natalia Lafourcade, plays during the movie's end credits. This special song won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2018.
The song was also featured in ABC's 2020 TV show The Disney Family Singalong: Volume II.
The Song's Story in Coco

"Remember Me" is used in many important ways throughout the movie.
- It starts as Ernesto de la Cruz's (Benjamin Bratt) most famous song. Ernesto is a big musician in the film. His music partner, Héctor Rivera (Gael García Bernal), actually wrote it. In this version, Ernesto sings it to his fans, asking them to remember him while he's away on tour.
- Later, the song becomes a sweet lullaby. Héctor sings it to his young daughter, Coco, before he has to leave home to be a traveling artist.
- As the movie goes on, the song helps connect an older Coco (Ana Ofelia Murguía) to her past. It also helps Miguel (Anthony Gonzalez) reunite with his great-grandmother.
- Finally, a pop version of the song plays during the end credits. This version is sung by famous artists Miguel and Natalia Lafourcade.
The song is like a special thread that connects different generations of the family through their shared love of music.
Making the Song
The amazing team who wrote the songs for Frozen, Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, were chosen to create the music for Coco. The movie's director, Lee Unkrich, had admired their work for a long time.
One of the biggest challenges was writing lyrics that could mean different things. The same words needed to fit when sung as a big mariachi song, a quiet lullaby, or a pop tune. The songwriters studied popular Mexican music to make sure the song felt real. They wanted it to sound like something a famous Mexican singer might have sung.
Robert Lopez wrote the music, and Kristen Anderson-Lopez wrote the words. She wanted the song to be about remembering people, even when they are far away. She explained that music has the power to bring people back to life, both in our memories and in our hearts.
Awards and Recognition
"Remember Me" won the highest award for a song in a movie: the Academy Award for Best Original Song. With this win, Robert Lopez became the first person ever to win all four major entertainment awards: an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar (Academy Award), and a Tony (EGOT).
The song also won the Critics' Choice Movie Award for Best Song. It was nominated for other big awards too, like the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song and the Grammy Award for Best Song Written for Visual Media.
