Club Career Highlights

Starting Out at VfB Leipzig

René Adler began playing football at just six years old. He joined the youth team of VfB Leipzig. After nine years there, he moved to the youth system of Bayer 04 Leverkusen in 2000.

Time with Bayer Leverkusen

Adler joined Bayer Leverkusen's B team in 2002. He played eight games for them in the 2002–03 season. By the 2003–04 season, he was part of the main team. This team played in the Bundesliga, Germany's top football league.

He didn't play any games for the main team right away. He continued to play for the B team until 2006. In May 2006, he had a rib injury that needed surgery. This meant he couldn't play until February 2007.

Bundesliga Debut and Early Success

René Adler made his first Bundesliga appearance on February 25, 2007. It was a big game against the league leaders, Schalke 04. The main goalkeeper was suspended, so Adler got his chance. He made ten amazing saves, stopping Schalke's attacks. Stefan Kießling scored a goal late in the game, giving Leverkusen a 1–0 win.

Leverkusen's manager praised Adler's "world-class saves." He helped his team break Schalke's 13-game unbeaten streak. He also saved a penalty kick against Rafael van der Vaart. That season, he played 15 games for the main team.

Becoming a Key Player

Adler continued to be the main goalkeeper for Bayer Leverkusen for several years. He played many games each season. However, he later faced injuries. Another talented goalkeeper, Bernd Leno, then took his place.

Adler decided not to renew his contract with Leverkusen. In the summer of 2012, he left the club after 12 years.

Moving to Hamburger SV

In 2012, Adler signed a five-year contract with Hamburg, another Bundesliga team. He played his first game for Hamburg in the German Cup. He was a regular player for Hamburg for several seasons.

In May 2017, Adler announced he would leave Hamburg. He had played for the club for five years.

Time at Mainz 05 and Retirement

In July 2017, Adler joined Mainz 05. He played for them for two seasons.

On May 1, 2019, René Adler announced he was retiring from professional football. He had played in 269 top-flight German matches during his career.

He played four games for the German U-21 team. He was also part of the German team that finished second in Euro 2008.

Playing for the German National Team

After Jens Lehmann retired and Robert Enke passed away, Adler became the first-choice goalkeeper for Germany. He made his debut for the German national team on October 11, 2008. This was in a World Cup qualifier against Russia.

He was expected to be Germany's main goalkeeper for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. However, a serious rib injury stopped him from going to South Africa. He was out of the national team for two years. He was called back in November 2012 for a friendly game against the Netherlands. This was because he was playing very well for Hamburger SV.

However, Adler was not chosen for the German team for the 2014 World Cup. Between 2008 and 2013, he played 12 games for the German national team.
