Rena Effendi (born in 1977) is a photographer from Azerbaijan. She works independently, telling stories through her pictures. Her photos often show how the environment changes, what life is like after wars, how the oil industry affects people, and the differences between rich and poor.

Early Life and Photography

Rena Effendi was born in 1977 in Baku, the capital city of Azerbaijan. She went to the Azerbaijan State Institute of Languages where she studied different languages.

Effendi started taking pictures in 2001. By 2005, she decided to become a full-time photographer. Before that, she worked for an organization that helped with economic development in Baku.

Pipe Dreams Project

Rena Effendi's first photo book was called Pipe Dreams. This book showed how the oil industry changed the lives of regular people. She photographed along the Baku–Tbilisi–Ceyhan pipeline in Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Turkey.

She first got a job from BP, a big oil company that runs this pipeline. While taking pictures for them, she noticed something important. Only a small number of people in the cities were getting rich from the oil boom. She worked on this project for six years, and it became her book Pipe Dreams.

Other Photo Stories

Effendi has also created many other photo stories. She took pictures in Chernobyl after the big nuclear accident in 1986. Her photos showed how people lived in that area. She published a book about this in 2010 called Chernobyl: Still Life in the Zone.

She also photographed village life in Khinalug, a remote village. She covered the Russia–Georgia war in 2008. Rena Effendi also showed the lives of young people in cities like Tehran, Moscow, and Cairo.

Where Her Work Appears

Rena Effendi's photographs have been seen in many famous magazines. These include the International Herald Tribune, Newsweek, Financial Times, Time Magazine, and National Geographic. Her work has also been shown in art galleries around the world. Some of these are the Saatchi Gallery in London and the Aperture Gallery in New York. Her photos have also been part of big art events like the Venice Biennial.

Awards and Recognition

Rena Effendi has won several important awards for her photography. She received the Fifty Crows Documentary Award and the Mario Giacomelli Memorial Award. She also won the Getty Images Editorial Grant.

In 2008, National Geographic Magazine gave her an All Roads Photography Award. The next year, in 2009, she won the Young Photographer in the Caucasus Award. In 2011, she received a Prince Claus Award. She also won third prize at the 2014 World Press Photo Contest for her work called "Transylvania: Built on Grass".
