Renato Ruggiero (born April 9, 1930 – died August 4, 2013) was an important Italian diplomat and politician. A diplomat is someone who represents their country in other nations. He was the leader of the World Trade Organization (WTO) from 1995 to 1999. He also briefly served as Italy's Foreign Minister in 2001. A Foreign Minister is the main person in charge of a country's relationships with other countries.

Who Was Renato Ruggiero?

Renato Ruggiero was born in Naples, Italy, on April 9, 1930. He studied law at Naples University and finished his degree in 1953. After university, he started working for the government in foreign service. This means he worked to build good relationships between Italy and other countries.

Early Career and Diplomacy

Before becoming a top diplomat, Ruggiero also worked in private companies. He held important positions at Fiat, a famous car company, and ENI, an energy company. His experience in business helped him become a skilled negotiator. A negotiator is someone who helps different groups agree on something.

He was known for being a very strong and smart negotiator. People even called him "Rocky" Ruggiero because of his tough style, like the movie character. He was involved in difficult situations, such as the Sigonella crisis in 1985. This was a tense event involving Italy, the United States, and Egypt.

Later Life and Achievements

From 1995 to 1999, Renato Ruggiero was the Director-General of the World Trade Organization. The WTO is an international group that helps countries trade fairly with each other. Leading the WTO is a very big job, as it involves working with many different nations.

In 2001, he became Italy's Foreign Minister for a short time. Even after this, he continued to work as an Ambassador. An ambassador is the highest-ranking diplomat representing their country abroad. At the time of his death in 2013, he was working for Citigroup, a large financial company.

Awards and Recognition

Renato Ruggiero received several important awards for his work. Cordone di gran Croce OMRI BAR.svg He was given the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic 1st Class / Knight Grand Cross on October 3, 1985. This is one of the highest honors in Italy.

The government of Japan also honored him with the Grand Cross of the Order of the Sacred Treasure. This shows how much his work was respected around the world.
