Renato Zaccarelli (born on January 18, 1951) is a famous Italian former footballer and manager. He was known for playing as a midfielder during his career.

Playing for Football Clubs

Renato Zaccarelli started playing football when he was young. He joined the youth team of Torino at age 15. To gain more experience, he played for other teams like Catania and Novara in Italy's second division, called Serie B.

He made his first appearance in Serie A, Italy's top league, with Verona in 1973. In the summer of 1974, he returned to Torino. He became a key player in their midfield.

Zaccarelli helped Torino win the Scudetto, which is the Serie A championship title, in the 1975–76 season. This was a very important win for the club. He played for Torino until he retired in 1987. He played 413 games and scored 21 goals for the team. He is one of the players with the most games played for Torino in Serie A.

Playing for Italy

Renato Zaccarelli also played for the Italian national team for five years. He played in 25 games and scored two goals for his country.

He was part of the team that played in the 1978 FIFA World Cup in Argentina. Italy finished fourth in that tournament. Zaccarelli played in five games and scored one goal. This goal helped Italy win 2–1 against France.

How He Played

Zaccarelli was known as an advanced playmaker. This means he was good at creating chances for his teammates and controlling the game from the midfield. He was an elegant and consistent player.

Later in his career, he changed his position on the field. He started playing as a libero, which is a defensive role. In this new role, he continued to play very well. In 1986, he won the Guerin d'Oro award, which is given to the best footballer in Serie A for that season.

Becoming a Manager

After he stopped playing football, Renato Zaccarelli started a career in management and coaching. He worked as a director for Torino and other clubs.

He began coaching with the Italy under-21 team. He was an assistant coach there. In 2002, he returned to Torino to lead their youth system.

He also coached the main Torino team two times. First, in the 2002–03 season, and then again in the 2004–05 Serie B season. During his second time as coach, he led Torino to win the promotion playoffs against Perugia. This win was very important for the club's future. After his time at Torino, he worked as a director for Bologna in 2005–06.
