Rengo is a city and a commune (a type of local government area) in the central part of Chile. It is located in the Cachapoal Province of the O'Higgins Region. Rengo is about 28 kilometers (17 miles) south of Rancagua. It is also about 114 kilometers (71 miles) south of Santiago, which is the capital city of Chile.

The city of Rengo was named after a brave leader called Toqui Rengo. He was known for his courage during the Battle of Lagunillas.

People and Population

Rengo covers an area of about 591.5 square kilometers (228.4 square miles). In 2002, a study by the National Statistics Institute showed that Rengo had 50,830 people living there. This included 25,311 men and 25,519 women.

Most of the people, about 37,075 (72.9%), lived in city areas. The rest, about 13,755 (27.1%), lived in country areas. Between 1992 and 2002, the number of people living in Rengo grew by 16.5%. This means 7,213 more people moved to the area.

How Rengo is Governed

As a commune, Rengo is a local government area in Chile. It is managed by a group of people called a municipal council. This council is led by an alcalde, who is like a mayor. The alcalde is chosen by the people in an election every four years.

People in Rengo also vote for representatives in the national government. These representatives help make laws for the country.

  • Hermes Ahumada (1911-2004), who was once the president of the Senate of Chile.
