Reorganized National Government of China facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Reorganized National Government of China (Chinese: 中華民國國民政府), also known as the Wang Jingwei regime (汪精衛政權), was a government in China during World War II. It was set up and controlled by the Empire of Japan during their war with China. This type of government, controlled by another country, is called a puppet government. It was led by a Chinese politician named Wang Jingwei. The regime started in 1940 and ended in 1945, when World War II finished.

What Was the Wang Jingwei Regime?

The Wang Jingwei regime was a government that existed in parts of China during the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945). This war was fought between China and Japan. Japan had invaded China and occupied many areas. To control these areas, Japan often set up governments that looked Chinese but were actually controlled by Japan. The Wang Jingwei regime was the most important of these.

Why Was it Called a "Puppet Government"?

A "puppet government" is like a puppet on strings. The puppet moves, but someone else is pulling the strings. In this case, the Wang Jingwei regime was the "puppet," and the "puppet master" was the Empire of Japan. Even though Chinese officials ran the government day-to-day, Japan made all the big decisions and had the real power. This meant the government served Japan's interests, not necessarily China's.

Who Was Wang Jingwei?

Wang Jingwei was a famous Chinese politician. Before the war, he was a very important leader in the Kuomintang (KMT), which was the ruling party of China. He was known for being a rival of Chiang Kai-shek, another powerful KMT leader.

Wang Jingwei's Decision

When Japan invaded China, many Chinese leaders fought against them. However, Wang Jingwei believed that China could not win the war against Japan. He thought it would be better to make peace with Japan, even if it meant working with them. In 1938, he left the main Chinese government and went to Nanjing, a city that Japan controlled. There, he worked with the Japanese to set up his new government.

Where Was This Government Located?

The Reorganized National Government was based in the city of Nanjing, which had been the capital of China before the war. It controlled several parts of eastern China that were occupied by Japan. However, it never controlled all of China. The main Chinese government, led by Chiang Kai-shek, continued to fight against Japan from a city called Chongqing.

The End of the Regime

The Wang Jingwei regime lasted for about five years. It ended in 1945, when World War II came to an end. Japan was defeated by the Allied powers, which included China, the United States, and others. After Japan's defeat, the Wang Jingwei regime collapsed. Wang Jingwei himself had died in 1944, before the war ended.
