A Look at Retiro's Past
Retiro has an interesting history, like many places in Puerto Rico.
Becoming Part of the United States
After the Spanish–American War, Puerto Rico was given to the United States by Spain. This happened because of an agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became an "unincorporated territory" of the U.S. This means it's a part of the U.S. but doesn't have all the same rights as a state.
Early Population Counts
In 1899, the United States Department of War did a special count of people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. They found that 983 people lived in the Retiro area at that time. Over the years, the number of people living in Retiro has changed, as you can see in the chart below.
