Reva is a small, unincorporated community located in Harding County, South Dakota, in the United States. An unincorporated community is a place where people live together but it doesn't have its own official local government like a city or town. Even though it's small, Reva has its own ZIP code, which is 57651.
The community was named after Reva Bonniwell, who was the daughter of one of the first people to settle in this area. Reva is also known for a fun event that happens every year: the Reva Turtle Races!
History of Reva
A very important event in history, called the Battle of Slim Buttes, happened near Reva on September 9–10, 1876. This battle was part of the Great Sioux War of 1876. It involved the United States Army and the Miniconjou Sioux people.
This battle was a significant moment for the Army. It was their first big success after a difficult defeat in June at the Battle of Little Bighorn, where General George Armstrong Custer and his soldiers were defeated.
During the Battle of Slim Buttes, about 150 soldiers from the 3rd U.S. Cavalry, led by Captain Anson Mills, surrounded a village of 37 lodges (homes). They attacked the next morning. Many Native Americans tried to escape. Chief American Horse the elder, along with 15 women and children, hid in a nearby ravine.
Chief American Horse was badly hurt and later died. Two women and one child also died. One tribal boy was found alive in the village; he had slept through the start of the fighting. The Sioux who escaped quickly told other nearby villages, including the Sans Arc, Brulé, and Cheyenne people, about the soldiers they had met.
