Revere is a small place in Madison County, North Carolina, in the United States. It's not a city or town with its own government, but a community where people live. Some people also call it Sodom or Sodom Laurel.
Why Revere Has Two Names
The community was first called Sodom. Some Presbyterian missionaries, who were religious leaders, didn't like this name. So, they officially changed it to Revere. But even today, many people who live there still use the name Sodom.
Music and Folk Traditions
Revere is famous for its many talented ballad singers. Ballads are old songs that tell stories, often passed down through families for many years.
In 1916, a well-known expert on folk music named Cecil Sharp visited Revere. He wrote down many "Old World" ballads that people sang to him. Some of these songs were sung by family members of a singer named Dillard Chandler.
More recently, in 2001, a book called Sodom Laurel Album was published by Rob Amberg. This book shares the traditions and way of life in Revere. It features local folk singers like Dellie Norton, Doug Wallin, and Sheila Kay Adams.
