A Look Back: History of Rhein-Erft-Kreis
The Rhein-Erft-Kreis we know today was formed in 1975. Before that, it was two separate areas: the rural districts of Bergheim and Cologne. They joined together to create this new district.
Later, on November 1, 2003, its name changed from Erftkreis to Rhein-Erft-Kreis. The new name includes the important Rhine river!
Geography: Rivers and Landscapes
The most important river here is the Erft. It's so important that the district is partly named after it! The Erft river flows through the lower parts of the Eifel mountains. It's located on the left side of the mighty Rhine river, which is one of Europe's biggest rivers.
Understanding the Coat of Arms
The coat of arms is like a special symbol for the Rhein-Erft-Kreis. It tells a story about the area's past.
- The left side shows a lion. This lion is from Jülich, because most of this area used to be part of the duchy of Jülich.
- The right side has a cross. This is the Cologne cross, which represents the old Cologne district that merged to form part of this area.
- At the very top, you can see a wavy line. This line stands for the Erft river itself.
