The Rhein-Sieg-Kreis is a special region, or "district," located in the southern part of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It's quite big and almost completely surrounds the famous city of Bonn.

History of Rhein-Sieg-Kreis

The Rhein-Sieg-Kreis you see today was created in 1969. This happened during a time when many areas in North Rhine-Westphalia were being reshaped. The new district was formed by joining two older areas: the Sieg District and the Rural District of Bonn.

Symbols of the District: The Coat of Arms

The Rhein-Sieg-Kreis has its own special symbol called a coat of arms. It tells a story about the district's past.

  • The red lion* on the coat of arms represents the dukes of Berg. These dukes used to own a large part of the land that is now in the district.
  • The black cross* is a symbol of Cologne. Another part of the district was once owned by the powerful bishops of Cologne.
  • The yellow sword* stands for Saint Michael. He was the patron saint of the very important Michaelsberg Abbey in Siegburg. This abbey was a big influence in the area.
