Bad Honnef is a special spa town in Germany. It's located near the city of Bonn in the Rhein-Sieg district. This town is part of the state called North Rhine-Westphalia.
Bad Honnef sits right on the border of the nearby state Rhineland-Palatinate. To the north, it's located on the slopes of the Drachenfels mountain. Drachenfels means "Dragon's Rock" and is part of the beautiful Siebengebirge mountain range.

Discovering the Dragon Spring
Bad Honnef is famous for its natural mineral spring. This spring is called the Drachenquelle, which means "Dragon Spring." It was found in 1897.
Before this discovery, the town was just called Honnef. It was mostly known for growing wine. But after the Dragon Spring was found, everything changed.
The town became a popular spa destination. People used the mineral water for both drinking and bathing. Because of this, the town added "Bad" to its name. "Bad" means "bath" or "spa" in German.

Bad Honnef includes several smaller areas or districts. Some of these are Aegidienberg, Rhöndorf, and Lohfelderfähre. Lohfelderfähre is close to the Rhine river, where you can take a ferry across to Rolandseck.

Konrad Adenauer
One very famous resident was Konrad Adenauer. He was the first leader, or Chancellor, of West Germany. He lived in Bad Honnef because it was close to Bonn, which was the capital city at that time. He also passed away in Bad Honnef.
Guido Westerwelle
Another well-known German politician was Guido Westerwelle. He was born in Bad Honnef. He later became a leader of the Free Democratic Party. He also served as Germany's Foreign Minister.
Bad Honnef Today
Since the 1980s, Bad Honnef has become an important place for conferences. Many meetings and events are held here. Because it's still close to Bonn, which is an important city, many federal offices are located in Bad Honnef.
Interestingly, Bad Honnef has a high level of wealth. It has the highest purchasing power of all towns in North Rhine-Westphalia. This means people in Bad Honnef generally have more money to spend. It also has one of the highest percentages of millionaires in the region.
