Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Rhonda Lee Hatcher is an American mathematician. She studies interesting topics like how numbers behave and special math functions called L-functions. She also enjoys fun math puzzles! She used to be a professor at Texas Christian University and is now retired.

Her Journey in Math

Rhonda Hatcher finished college with top honors from the University of Colorado Boulder in 1980. She then went to Harvard University and earned her Ph.D. (a very high degree) in math in 1988. Her special project was about Heights and L-Series. After that, she taught at St. Olaf College in Minnesota for three years. Then, she moved to Texas Christian University.

At Texas Christian, Professor Hatcher helped student athletes. From 1999 to 2023, she was the Faculty Athletics Representative. This meant she made sure student athletes were doing well in their studies. She also worked with the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). This group sets rules for college sports. She once disagreed with a rule change. This rule would have let students with high grades transfer to other schools and keep playing sports. She thought it might not be fair to all students, especially African-American students.

Her Book

Rhonda Hatcher wrote a book called Mathematics Beyond the Numbers. She wrote it with George T. Gilbert. The first edition came out in 2000, and a second one in 2012. This book is a math textbook for college students. It shows how math is used in real life. It covers topics like how voting systems work and how to count votes fairly. It also talks about genetics, opinion polls, and even secret codes (cryptography). The book teaches about probability (the chance of something happening) and statistics (collecting and understanding data). It also explores graph theory (connecting dots and lines) and number theory (the study of numbers).

Awards and Recognition

In 1998, Rhonda Hatcher won a special award for teaching math. It was called the Deborah and Franklin Haimo Award. The award recognized her excellent teaching at Texas Christian University. She also helped high school teachers get ready to teach AP Calculus. Professor Hatcher also ran summer programs for college students. Students from all over the country came to work with her. They studied number theory, group theory, and graph theory. Some of the math research they did even got published in science magazines!
