Riaz Shahid (born in 1927, died October 1, 1972) was a talented Pakistani filmmaker, writer, and journalist. He made many important movies and helped shape the film industry in Pakistan.

Early Life and Film Journey
Riaz Shahid was born in 1927 in Quetta, which was part of British India at the time. His family came from Punjab. His real name was Sheikh Riaz, but everyone knew him by his nickname, Shahid.
He studied at Islamia College in Lahore, Pakistan. Riaz started his career as a journalist. He wrote for a newspaper called Chataan. Later, he joined another publication, Lail-o-Nihar, which was run by the famous poet Faiz Ahmad Faiz. Riaz also wrote a novel called Hazar Dastaan.
Starting in Movies
Riaz Shahid entered the Pakistani film industry thanks to his friend, the actor Allauddin. He began by writing stories and dialogues for films. His first movie as a writer was Bharosa in 1958.
In 1962, Riaz Shahid started directing films himself. His first movie as a director was Susraal. He often worked with the well-known poet Habib Jalib. Together, they created many popular and meaningful films. Some of his famous movies include Shaheed (1962), Farangi (1964), Khamosh Raho (1964), Zarqa (1969), and Yeh Aman (1971).
Family Life
Riaz Shahid was married to the famous actress Neelo. They had three children together. Their first child was a daughter named Zarqa. Then they had two sons. One son is Shaan, who grew up to become a very well-known Pakistani film actor. Their other son, Sarosh, also acted in a few Pakistani movies.
His Legacy and Passing
Riaz Shahid passed away on October 1, 1972, in Lahore, Pakistan. He died from leukemia, a type of cancer.
Many people remember Riaz Shahid as a very important person in Pakistani cinema. The famous Pakistani actress and director Sangeeta once said that Riaz Shahid was a "visionary." She meant that he could see things happening in the world, like events in Kashmir, and show them clearly in his movies, even back in the 1960s. She said he was the best director of his time.
Another film producer, Choudhry Ejaz Kamran, also praised Riaz Shahid. He said that Riaz Shahid was special not just for his directing skills, but also for making "meaningful cinema." His films were often about serious and important ideas. Choudhry Ejaz Kamran mentioned that Riaz Shahid's super-hit films are still used as guides for new filmmakers today.
