Ricardo Anaya Cortés, born on February 25, 1979, in Naucalpan de Juárez, Mexico, is a Mexican lawyer and politician. He is a member of the National Action Party (PAN), which is a center-right political party. He served as the president of this party for a time. Since 2024, he has been working as a senator.

Anaya has held important roles in Mexico's government. He was a member of the Congress of the Union, which is like a parliament. He also served as the President of the Chamber of Deputies. He was the leader of his party's group in the Chamber of Deputies.

He was the National President of the National Action Party until December 9, 2017. He left this role to run for president in the 2018 presidential election. He ran as part of a group of parties, including the PAN, the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD), and Citizens' Movement (MC).

Since January 2019, Ricardo Anaya has been a visiting professor at the School of International and Public Affairs, Columbia University. He teaches about politics there.

Education and Learning

Ricardo Anaya Cortés has a strong background in education. He earned a Bachelor of Law degree with honors from the Universidad Autónoma de Querétaro. This means he studied law and did very well.

He also has a master's degree in Tax Law from Universidad del Valle de México. He graduated with honors from this program too. Later, he earned a Ph.D. in Political Science and Social Studies from Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). He also completed this degree with honors.

Anaya has shared his knowledge by teaching. He was a permanent lecturer in Constitutional Law and State Theory. He taught these subjects at the Law School of Universidad Autónoma de Querétaro.

Political Journey

Ricardo Anaya Cortés has been a member of the National Action Party for many years. He started his political career at a young age. In 2000, when he was just 21, he ran for a local deputy position in Querétaro. He helped his party gain many more votes in that election.

From 2003 to 2009, he worked as the Private Secretary for the Governor of the State of Querétaro. He also served as the Human Development Coordinator for the Querétaro government from 2008 to 2009.

He became a local deputy for the State of Querétaro. In this role, he led the National Action Party's group, which was the largest group in the state's congress.

From February 2010 to March 2011, he was the President of his party's committee in Querétaro. After that, in April 2011, he was appointed as the Undersecretary of Tourism Planning. This was a role in the federal government under President Felipe Calderón Hinojosa.

Anaya was elected as a Federal Deputy from 2012 to 2015. During this time, he became the President of the Chamber of Deputies. He held this important position from September 2013 to March 2014.

In September 2014, he became the National President of the PAN party. He took over when the previous president, Gustavo Madero Muñoz, took a break. Anaya had been the General Secretary of the party before this.

In January 2015, Gustavo Madero Muñoz returned to lead the party. Anaya then became the coordinator for the PAN's group in the Chamber of Deputies.

In 2015, Ricardo Anaya ran for the position of National President of his party again. He won with a large number of votes, showing strong support from party members.

In 2017, Ricardo Anaya Cortés met with German Chancellor Angela Merkel. They talked about global events, especially after Donald Trump became President of the United States. Anaya also gave a speech at George Washington University. He spoke about the relationship between Mexico and the United States. He disagreed with the idea of building a wall on the border, calling it "insulting and unacceptable."

Anaya was one of the main candidates for President of Mexico in the 2018 general elections. He finished second in the election, losing to Andrés Manuel López Obrador. Anaya won only the state of Guanajuato, while López Obrador won most other states.
