Ricardo Gullón Fernández (born August 30, 1908 – died February 11, 1991) was an important Spanish writer, essayist, and literary critic. He was born in Astorga, a town in Spain.

Ricardo Gullón went to high school in France and later studied law at the University of Madrid. He became very good friends with the famous writer Juan Ramón Jiménez. In 1935, Ricardo Gullón published his first book, called Fin de semana.

Life and Work

Ricardo Gullón faced difficulties during the Spanish Civil War because of his beliefs. He was helped to be released by other writers, Luis Rosales and Luis Felipe Vivanco.

In 1953, he traveled to Puerto Rico to visit his friend Juan Ramón Jiménez, who was living there. Ricardo Gullón stayed in Puerto Rico for three years.

Moving to the United States

After his time in Puerto Rico, Ricardo Gullón moved to the United States. There, he taught Spanish literature at several well-known universities. These included Columbia University, the University of Chicago, and the University of Texas at Austin.

He helped students with their advanced studies on topics like Spanish novels from the 1800s and modern Spanish poetry. In the U.S., he is known as one of the top experts on Spanish culture and literature of the 20th century.

In 1989, Ricardo Gullón was chosen to be a member of the Royal Spanish Academy. This is a very important group that looks after the Spanish language.

Ricardo Gullón passed away in Madrid in 1991.
