Rice is a small community in Stevens County, Washington, United States. It's called an "unincorporated community" because it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town.

Rice is located along the Columbia River. It's about 13.5 miles (21.7 km) south-southwest of Kettle Falls. The area uses the ZIP code 99167.

How Rice Got Its Name

Rice, Washington, was named after an early settler. His name was William B. Rice. He moved to the area in 1883 and started a farm there.

The Rice Family Home

William's son, Bert William Rice, was born in the original family home in 1886. Bert continued to live and farm the land. He even built two more homes nearby for his parents and his own growing family. Bert and his wife, Ola D. Deakins, had several children.

One of their children, Pearl Rice, was born in the family home in 1916. Pearl later married John V. Ball Sr. He was an airplane mechanic during World War II. Pearl lived in the family home for 62 years before moving away.

Working the Land

The Rice and Ball families worked hard on their land. John Ball and Bert Rice dug a 2-mile (3.2 km) long creek. This creek, called Cheweka Creek, came from a spring in the mountains.

Water for Farms and Homes

The small creek flowed through the beautiful gardens of the Rice-Ball homes. They had a special system to use the water. It helped them water their alfalfa fields and also provided water for their homes.

Besides farming, John V. Ball Sr. worked for the Washington State Department of Transportation for 29 years.

Next Generations

John and Pearl Ball had three children: Linda, John Jr., and Denny. John V. Ball Jr. was born in 1945. He remembers going to a two-room schoolhouse that had outdoor bathrooms. Even with these simple beginnings, he later attended Eastern Washington University.

The original family homes have since been sold. However, they are still standing today.
