Early Life and Education
Richard Almgill Harrison was born in Thirsk, North Yorkshire, England. In 1832, when he was eight years old, he moved to the United States with his family. They settled in Ohio.
Richard went to public schools as he grew up. He later studied law at the Cincinnati Law School. He graduated in 1846 and became a lawyer that same year. He started his law practice in London, Ohio.
A Career in Law and Politics
Richard Harrison had a busy career in both law and government.
Serving Ohio
He first became involved in Ohio state politics.
- He was a member of the Ohio House of Representatives from 1858 to 1859. This group helps make laws for the state.
- He then served in the Ohio Senate from 1860 to 1861. This is another part of the state's lawmaking body.
National Politics
In 1861, Richard Harrison was elected to the United States House of Representatives. This is a part of the U.S. Congress in Washington, D.C. He was elected as a member of the Unionist Party. This party supported keeping the United States together during the time of the Civil War. He served in Congress from 1861 to 1863.
After his time in Congress, Harrison continued to practice law. He worked in Columbus, Ohio, until he passed away.
Family Life
On December 21, 1847, Richard Harrison married Maria Louisa Warner in London, Ohio. Together, they had seven children: three daughters and four sons.
Richard Almgill Harrison passed away on July 30, 1904, in Columbus, Ohio. He was buried in Kirkwood Cemetery in London, Ohio.
