Sir Richard Bulstrode (born 1610 – died 3 October 1711) was an English writer, diplomat, and soldier. He was the son of Edward Bulstrode.

Who Was Sir Richard Bulstrode?

Richard Bulstrode was born in Astley, Warwickshire, England. He went to Pembroke College, Cambridge for his education. After studying law in London, he joined the army. This was at the start of the English Civil War in 1642. He fought for King Charles I.

Life as a Diplomat and Knight

Later in 1673, Richard Bulstrode became an agent for King Charles II in Brussels. This meant he represented the king there. In 1675, he was made a knight. This is why he is called "Sir" Richard Bulstrode.

When King James II had to leave England, Sir Richard followed him into exile. The king gave him a regular payment to help him. Sir Richard Bulstrode died in St. Germain on 3 October 1711. He lived to be 101 years old!

What Did Sir Richard Bulstrode Write?

Sir Richard Bulstrode is best known for his book, Memoirs and Reflections upon the Reign and Government of King Charles I. This book was published in 1721, after he had passed away.

He also wrote the Life of James II. Another important work was Original Letters written to the Earl of Arlington (1712). These letters were mostly written from Brussels. They describe important events that happened in the Netherlands during 1674.

Who Was Whitelocke Bulstrode?

Sir Richard's second son was Whitelocke Bulstrode (born 1650 – died 1724). Unlike his father, Whitelocke stayed in England. He held several official jobs. In 1717, he wrote a pamphlet supporting King George I. This also supported the House of Hanover becoming the new royal family.

Whitelocke Bulstrode published a book called A Discourse of Natural Philosophy. He was also a well-known Protestant writer. He died in London on 27 November 1724.
