Richard Byron, 2nd Baron Byron was an important English nobleman who lived from 1606 to 1679. He was a strong supporter of King Charles I during a big conflict in England called the English Civil War. He was also a politician and a knight.

Richard Byron's Life

Richard Byron was born in 1606. His father was John Byron, and his mother was Anne Molyneux. His grandfather was Sir John Byron (died 1623), who was involved in Parliament.

A Royalist Supporter

Richard Byron was a brave soldier for King Charles I. People who supported the King during the English Civil War were called Royalists or Cavaliers. In 1642, he fought as a "Valiant Colonel" in the Battle of Edgehill. Because of his bravery, he was made a knight that same year.

He also studied at Oxford University, earning a Master of Arts (MA) degree in 1642. Richard Byron was given important jobs, like being the Governor of Newark in Nottinghamshire. He also served as the Governor of Appleby Castle in Westmorland.

Becoming a Baron

In 1652, Richard Byron's brother, John Byron, 1st Baron Byron, passed away. Richard then became the 2nd Baron Byron, inheriting the title. He was also a Member of the House of Lords, which is part of the English Parliament.

Lord Byron passed away on October 4, 1679, when he was 73 years old. His son, William Byron, 3rd Baron Byron, then became the next Baron.

Byron Family Connections

Lord Byron was married twice. His first wife was Elizabeth Rossell. Together, they had six children. Their son, William Byron, 3rd Baron Byron (1636–1695), later became the 3rd Baron. Their daughter, Catherine Byron, married Sir William Stanhope.

After 1651, Lord Byron married his second wife, Elizabeth Booth. She was the daughter of Sir George Booth, 1st Baronet. They did not have any children together.

Richard Byron also had a younger brother named Sir Robert Byron. He was also a Royalist soldier who fought for the King.
