About Richard Dominguez

Early Life and Art Journey

Richard Dominguez was born in Dallas, Texas, on September 22, 1960. He was the second of seven children. Richard grew up in a part of West Dallas.

He first discovered comic books when he was six years old. He would sneak into his uncle's room to read his large comic book collection. In high school, Richard studied Commercial Art. He later took classes to learn how to draw people. After college, he worked at a supermarket. There, he created and painted signs for displays. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Richard worked at different art studios. He also designed logos for sports teams and small businesses.

Creating El Gato Negro

El Gato Negro 1
El Gato Negro made his debut in El Gato Negro #1 (October 1993). The cover art is by Dave Kramer.

Dominguez first thought of El Gato Negro in the mid-1980s. He originally planned for the character to be part of a superhero group. This group was called Team Tejas. However, he spent more time developing El Gato Negro. Because of this, he decided to focus on El Gato Negro first. He put the Team Tejas project aside for later.

Richard once said:

El Gato Negro was created when I was sketching in my notebook during classes...He was supposed to be part of an all-Hispanic superhero group called "Team Tejas". I liked this character more and focused on him, putting the rest of the team aside.

Many things inspired El Gato Negro's look and personality. These included some of Dominguez's favorite comic and pulp heroes. Some of these were The Spirit, The Crimson Avenger, Daredevil, Nightwing, The Shadow, The Phantom, Zorro, and especially Batman. Ideas from Japanese animation, manga, and martial arts movies also helped create El Gato Negro's costume and gear.

Richard was inspired by another comic character, Relampago, to publish his own comic. So, El Gato Negro first appeared in his own comic series in 1993. Richard wrote and drew this first series himself. It became very popular. Later, a second series called "El Gato Negro: Nocturnal Warrior" was released.

El Gato Negro's popularity has led to him appearing in other comics. He was even featured in Mountain Dew's "Do the Dew" Tour. Richard Dominguez is currently talking about a possible live-action movie based on El Gato Negro.

Azteca Productions

Dominguez started his company, Azteca Productions, in 1993. Their first comic was the debut of El Gato Negro. This comic is now considered the company's main title. Dominguez later launched Team Tejas in 1997. He worked on this with his friend and writer Michael S. Moore.

Comic book publishing slowed down in the late 1990s. This was due to big changes in the comic book market. During this time, Dominguez focused on his family. He returned to comics in 2004 with a second El Gato Negro series. Michael S. Moore wrote it, and Efren Molina drew the pictures. Current projects from Azteca Productions include Lucha Grande Comics, [The Acolyte, Demon Hunter], and Tonatiuh the Almighty.

Family Life

Richard Dominguez lives in Dallas, Texas. He lives there with his wife, Olga Dominguez, and their four children.

P.A.C.A.S.

The Professional Amigos of Comic Art Society or P.A.C.A.S. was a non-profit group. It was started in 1995 by comic creators Richard Dominguez, Carlos Saldaña, Jose Martinez, and Fernando Rodriguez.

The group's goal was to bring together different comic artists, writers, and publishers. They wanted to help each other with their projects. They also aimed to create more opportunities for growth in the comic art community. The group grew to over fifty members. Most members lived in California, but some were from other countries. For example, Oscar Loyo and the ¡Ka-Boom! Estudio group were from Mexico.
