Richard Herbert (born 1557, died 1596) was an important person in England. He was known as the Lord of Cherbury (or Chirbury) in Shropshire and also of Montgomery Castle. He worked as a Justice of the Peace, which meant he helped keep law and order in his area. He was also a Member of Parliament, representing people in the government.

Richard Herbert's Life and Role
Richard Herbert was the oldest son of Edward Herbert (died 1593). His family was connected to the powerful Earls of Pembroke. In 1576, Richard studied law at a famous place called the Middle Temple. This was a school for people who wanted to become lawyers.
His Family and Home
In 1581, Richard married Magdalen Newport. She was the daughter of Sir Richard Newport (died 1570). Their first son, Edward Herbert, 1st Baron Herbert of Cherbury, was born in 1583. He later became a very famous writer and diplomat.
Richard and Magdalen had many other children. These included Elizabeth, Margaret, Richard, William, Charles, and the famous poet George Herbert (born in 1593). They also had Henry, Frances, and Thomas, who was born after his father died. By 1593, the family lived in a large house called Black Hall, near Montgomery Castle.
His Work in Government
Richard Herbert was very active in public service. From 1594 to 1596, he was the Custos Rotulorum of Montgomeryshire. This important job meant he was the chief record keeper for the county. He was also in charge of the local justices.
He served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Montgomery Boroughs in 1581. Later, he represented Montgomeryshire in Parliament in 1584. This showed his commitment to serving his community and country.
His Legacy and Memorial
Richard Herbert took over his father's estates in 1593. He passed away in 1596, while his wife was expecting their tenth child. He was buried on October 15, 1596, in the church of Saint Nicholas in Montgomery. After his death, his family moved first to Oxford and then to London.
In 1600, Richard's widow, Magdalen, had a beautiful monument built for him in Montgomery church. This special tomb has statues of both Richard and Magdalen. It also includes smaller figures of eight of their children. The monument shows Richard's armor and family symbols, as well as Magdalen's clothing and family symbols. Magdalen later remarried in 1609 to Sir John Danvers and passed away in 1627.
