Edward married Elizabeth Price and they had four sons, including Matthew and Richard Herbert. Through his son Richard, Edward was the grandfather of two famous people: Edward Herbert, 1st Baron Herbert of Cherbury, who was a soldier, diplomat, and writer, and George Herbert, a well-known poet and priest.

Edward's Early Life and Military Service

Edward Herbert took over his father's estate in 1539. He spent some time living a lively life at the royal court before joining the military.

In 1549, he served under his cousin, Sir William Herbert. He helped put down a rebellion known as the Prayer Book Rebellion. In 1554, he also helped with Wyatt's rebellion. Later, in 1557, Edward led 500 men in a big battle called the Battle of St. Quentin.

A Career in Parliament

Edward Herbert was a Member of Parliament (MP) for Montgomeryshire. An MP is someone elected to represent their area in the Parliament of England, which is like a country's main law-making group.

He served in Parliament many times:

  • March 1553
  • October 1553
  • April 1554
  • November 1554
  • 1558
  • 1559
  • 1563
  • 1571
  • 1589

He was an MP in almost every Parliament during his time, except for one in 1555. He was absent from a Parliament session before that and was fined a small amount of money for it. By 1585, many people believed he supported Mary, Queen of Scots.

Blackhall Mansion and Family Legacy

Edward Herbert built a grand house for himself. It was called Llys-mawr in Welsh and Blackhall in English. This mansion was famous for its warm welcome and hospitality. His grandson, Edward, once wrote that people would say, "Fly where thou wilt, thou wilt light at Black-hall," meaning that no matter where a bird flew, it would always find a good place to land at Blackhall. This showed how well-known and welcoming the house was.

When Edward Herbert was alive, his family, the Herberts, were still quite new to the Montgomery area. However, by the time he died, they had become the richest and most powerful family there. They remained very important in the region for many generations.
