Richard Thomas Herd Jr. (born September 26, 1932 – died May 26, 2020) was an American actor. He appeared in many TV shows and movies from the 1970s to the 2010s. He was well-known in the science fiction world. He played John, the Supreme Commander of the Visitors, in the 1983 miniseries V and its 1984 sequel V: The Final Battle.
Some of his other important roles included Admiral William Noyce on seaQuest DSV. He also played Admiral Owen Paris on Star Trek: Voyager. Owen Paris was the father of the character Tom Paris. Richard Herd was also known for playing Matt Wilhelm, George Costanza's boss, on the popular show Seinfeld. He also lent his voice to Father Elijah in the video game Fallout: New Vegas.

Early Life and Army Service
Richard Herd was born in Boston, Massachusetts. His mother was Katherine Lydon, and his father was Richard Herd Sr. His father was a train engineer who sadly passed away while serving in the Army during World War II.
During the Korean War, Richard Herd was drafted into the Army. He hurt his knee during his basic training. After that, he served in the United States Army Ordnance Corps. He was honorably discharged from the Army. Later, he worked as a civilian actor for the United States Army Signal Corps in Long Island, New York. He helped make Army training films alongside writer Robert Ludlum.
Acting Career Highlights
Richard Herd began his acting career on stage in New York. His first movie role was in Hercules in New York in 1970. He gained more attention for his role in the thriller The China Syndrome. In this movie, he played Evan McCormack, a dishonest chairman of an electric company. This role helped him become known outside the United States. He also played James W. McCord, Jr. in the Academy Award-winning movie All the President's Men (1976).
Besides his science fiction roles, he was a regular on the show T. J. Hooker. He played Captain Dennis Sheridan from 1982 to 1983. He also made guest appearances on many other popular TV shows. These included M*A*S*H, The Rockford Files, The Golden Girls, and The A-Team. He appeared twice on Quantum Leap. In one episode, he played a children's show host called "Captain Galaxy."
In 2012, he played Judge Paul Landsman in an episode of CSI: Miami. One of his later film roles was Roman Armitage in the 2017 movie Get Out. His final role was in the 2019 film The Silent Natural.
Recognition and Personal Life
Richard Herd was honored for his work in Old Time Radio. He was inducted into the National Broadcaster Hall of Fame. He also served as the third National Vice President of the Screen Actors Guild. This is a group that represents actors.
Richard Herd lived in Los Angeles with his wife, Patricia Crowder Herd. They were married for 40 years. He passed away at his home on May 26, 2020, at the age of 87, after an illness.
