General Sir Richard John Meade GCSI CIE (25 September 1821 – 20 March 1894) was a British officer. He served in the British Indian Army. From 1870 to 1881, he was the Chief Commissioner of Mysore. This was an important leadership role in India.
Early Life and Military Start
Richard Meade was born on September 25, 1821. His family lived in Innishannon, County Cork, which is in Ireland. His father, Captain John Meade, was in the Royal Navy.
Richard went to school at the Royal Naval School in London. After finishing school, he joined the army. He became an ensign, which is a junior officer rank. He was assigned to the 65th Regiment of the Bengal Native Infantry.
Important Roles in India
Sir Richard Meade played a role in the Indian Mutiny. This was a major uprising in India between 1857 and 1859. He was part of the Central India Field Force. He led a group that captured a key leader of the uprising, Tantya Tope.
Later, from 1875 to 1881, he became the British representative in the state of Hyderabad. This was a very important and challenging job. He helped guide the young ruler of Hyderabad, Maḥbūb ʻAlī Khān. This ruler was called the nizam.
One of Meade's big successes was stopping efforts by the prime minister, Mir Turab Ali Khan. The prime minister wanted Hyderabad to control the nearby area of Berar again. Meade made sure this did not happen.
Life After Service
Sir Richard Meade also worked in other important political jobs. He served in places like Gwalior, Indore, Mysore, and Baroda. After he retired from the army, he became the Chairman of the Hyderabad State Railway Company. This company managed the railways in Hyderabad.
He passed away on March 20, 1894, at the age of 73. He died in Hyères, France, where he was also buried. His grave has a special message. It says he was born on September 25, 1821, and entered eternal life on March 20, 1894.
