Richard Sackville (escheator) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sir Richard Sackville (about 1507 – 1566) was an important English administrator and politician. He lived in places like Ashburnham and Buckhurst in Sussex, and Westenhanger in Kent. He served as a Member of Parliament, helping to make laws for England.

His Family

Richard Sackville was the oldest son of John Sackville. His mother was Margaret. Her father was Sir William Boleyn. This made Richard Sackville a cousin to Anne Boleyn, who later became Queen of England.

His Career

Sir Richard Sackville held many important jobs in the English government. He was a top financial helper, working as the under-treasurer of the exchequer. He also led a special court called the Court of Augmentations, which managed lands belonging to the Crown.

He was the first person to be called the Lord Lieutenant of Sussex. This meant he was the Queen's main representative in that county. He also managed lands for the archbishop of Canterbury.

Sir Richard was elected as a Member of Parliament several times. He represented different areas like Chichester, Sussex, and Portsmouth. He was made a knight by 1549.

For a short time, he lost many of his paid jobs. He then worked as a JP in Sussex. This meant he helped keep law and order in his local area.

When Queen Elizabeth I came to the throne, Sir Richard's luck changed. Queen Elizabeth's mother, Anne Boleyn, was his cousin. In 1559, he was given the important job of Chancellor of the Exchequer. He kept this role until he passed away in 1566.

Marriage and Children

In 1535, Richard Sackville married Winifred. She was the daughter of Sir John Brydges, who had been the Lord Mayor of the City of London.

Richard and Winifred had a son named Thomas. Thomas later became a favorite of Queen Elizabeth I. They also had a daughter named Anne.

After Sir Richard Sackville died, his wife Winifred married again. She married John Paulet, the second Marquess of Winchester.
