Richard Stanley Thorp (born January 2, 1932 – died May 22, 2013) was an English actor. He was best known for playing the character Alan Turner for 30 years. This role was in the popular ITV TV show Emmerdale, from 1982 to 2013. Richard Thorp also appeared in movies like The Dam Busters (1955).

Richard Thorp's Early Life
Richard Thorp was born in Purley, Surrey, England. He wanted to be an actor from a young age. Before acting, he worked in a shoe company called Lilley & Skinner. His father was one of the directors there.
While working, Richard wrote advertisements for shoes. He also kept doing amateur plays, which are plays done for fun, not for money. He often arrived late for work. Because of this, his father fired him. This allowed Richard to follow his dream and train to become a professional actor. He studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
Richard Thorp's Acting Career
Richard Thorp had important roles in several TV shows. He played Dr. John Rennie in Emergency – Ward 10 from 1957 to 1961. He was also Doug Randall in Crossroads in 1975.
His most famous role was Alan Turner in Emmerdale. He played this character for over 30 years. After Clive Hornby passed away in 2008, Richard Thorp became the actor who had been on Emmerdale the longest. He enjoyed being on the show for so many years. However, he sometimes felt his character, Alan Turner, was not used as much in the storylines.
Richard Thorp also appeared in an episode of To the Manor Born. He played a railway official named Lovejoy. This episode was about closing a local railway station. He also appeared on a TV game show called Lily Savage's Blankety Blank.
Richard Thorp's Personal Life
Richard Thorp was a very private person. He did not share much about his personal life. However, he did give an interview in 1995 to a newspaper called The People.
He was very good friends with some of his co-stars from Emmerdale. These included Lorraine Chase, who played his daughter, Steph Stokes, on the show. He was also close friends with Sheree Murphy, who played his granddaughter, Tricia Stokes.
In July 2009, Richard Thorp took a break from Emmerdale. He had to have an operation on his knee. He returned to the show in April 2010.
Richard Thorp's Death
Richard Thorp passed away in Shrewsbury on May 22, 2013. The producer of Emmerdale, Kate Oates, spoke about his death. She said it was a sad loss for Emmerdale. She mentioned that Richard had been a very important part of the show for many years. Kate Oates also said that Richard had a wonderful sense of humor. Everyone who worked on the show and knew him would miss him very much.
