Richard Weiszmann: Soccer Player and Scientist
Richard Weiszmann started his soccer journey in college. He went to the University of California, Berkeley. There, he played on the men's soccer team from 1991 to 1994. He was a really good player, earning "All Far West" honors in both 1993 and 1994. This means he was one of the best players in his region.
Early Professional Soccer
When college was not in session during 1994, Weiszmann played for a team called the Santa Cruz Surf. This team was part of the USISL league. In 1995, he played for another team, the North Bay Breakers. Both of these teams helped him gain experience in professional soccer.
Playing in Major League Soccer
In February 1996, a big moment happened for Richard. The New England Revolution team chose him in the 10th round of the 1996 MLS Inaugural Player Draft. This draft was how teams picked players for the very first season of Major League Soccer (MLS). He played ten games for the Revolution. However, he was "waived" on June 30, 1996. This means the team released him.
After leaving the Revolution, he went back to Northern California. He signed with the San Jose Clash team. But he never got to play in a main game for them.
After the MLS
In 1997, Richard Weiszmann joined the Chico Rooks. This team was also in the USISL. He played with the Rooks until the end of the 1999 season.
What He Does Now
After his playing career, Richard Weiszmann started coaching. He has coached for many years at the Diablo Futbol Club (DFC). He is now the club's Director of Boys Coaching. This means he helps guide and train young male soccer players. Besides coaching, he also works as a scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
